The Juxtopia Group, Inc. was founded by Dr. Jayfus Tucker Doswell in 2000 while he was simulataneously, taking a PhD in information technology, building a biomedical and information technology (BIO-IT) company, and working full time as a senior software engineer.

Dr. Doswell’s first hand observation of the continual educational plight of underserved and disadvantaged minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math, and the lack of qualified American born scientist, engineers, technologist, and mathematicians in the workplace, inspired Dr. Doswell to lead a significant effort under the Juxtopia Group. This national “juxtopian” effort will increase STEM proficiency in all educational levels, the workplace, and in entrepreneurship for underserved and disadvantaged individuals across all ages and educational levels.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Doswell attended Baltimore City public schools. He was raised by Brenda Tucker Doswell, an educator, songtress, and entrepreneur, and Ronald Jayfus Doswell, a social worker, historian, and entrepreneur.

Dr. Doswell is also a descendent of a long African American Virginia history. His mother, is a direct descendent from the first African American child born in America, William Tucker. His father’s decedents were African American land owners and entrepreneurs, which we can still see historical remnants from Doswell, Virginia.

Dr. Doswell is well known as a multitalented musician/composer, athlete, engineer, entrepreneur, poet, scientist, technologist, visionary, and leader. As a young child, he excelled in violin and piano performance, martial arts, entrepreneurship, languages, and computer programming. However, he lacked the mathematic and technical mentorship to pursue his dream of becoming a neuro-surgeon or robotics engineer and consequently did not develop an early STEM foundation.

Without a solid mathematical foundation, young Jayfus had two choices,1.) to pursue music or 2.) a STEM career. Doswell decided early to strengthen his limitation in mathematics and become a symbol for other young underserved and disadvantaged individuals who also experience similar STEM related limitations. As a result, Dr. Doswell decided to pursue degrees in computer science and cognitive neuropscyhology at Oberlin College, Systems and Computer Science from Howard University, and a PhD in Information Technology from George Mason University. His PhD research concentrated on developing and evaluating a Mixed Reality system (e.g., Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality) architecture for improving human learning performance. He also continued to build his biomedical and information technology, Juxtopia, LLC at the same time. Doswell still performs and composes music, but for fun.

Dr. Doswell’s research in advanced learning and instructional technologies is published around the world ranging from Egypt and Greece to Canada and Finland. His core research is now conducted from this not for profit organization.

His biggest joy is contributing his knowledge to inspire, motivate, and grow the next generation of multidisciplinary STEM leaders in academics, the workplace, and in entrepreneurship.
